“DEAR HUMANS”

Written by Alma Claire / Art by Joyce Lee

dear humans

i am in pain; each and every day

being pulled from the root and burned to soot

i am crumbling under the weight of it all;

your hungry greed

your insatiable needs

did you never learn to love the trees and the bees?

i am begging… please.

please stop to breathe and feel the life inside

the rushing of your blood like ocean tides

the flooding of your eyes like rain from the skies

you and i

are one.

i have been patient,

tried to give you time and space

to look up and face

all the ways you have changed me

but still,

over the melting snow and crumbling forests you march

building towers of gold instead of noah’s ark,

over the dying cries of species now extinct

i hear you laugh and cheers as your champagne goes clink

dear humans

i have been abused; but let me remind you of one important truth

i was here long before any of you

so this is my prayer and my plea:

that you will make the changes you need to exist with me

but if you should choose not to heed this warning,

if your greed and your ‘needs’ rise again morning after morning

know that though i never wanted to hurt you

i will have no choice but to get rid of you…

dear humans

i am in pain; each and every day

i am begging… please.

did you never learn to love the trees and the bees?
